It has been said too many times. Slowly we start to believe it, to identify with it. We must not. We must not believe it, permit it, accept it as ours. Do not let our captors grow on us, do not think of this situation as normal and most of all, do not think that it cannot be changed.
No, our country is not a country that turns her back freely on the European community. That’s just Orbán and his business partners.
Our country is not a country intent on being the henchman of Russia. That’s just Orbán and his ilk.
Our country is not a country that accepts corruption as a natural phenomenon. That’s just Orbán and his crew.
Our country is not a country where solidarity has withered and the destitute are left to suffer in their own grime without assistance under undignified living conditions. That is just the system of Orbán.
Our country is not a country where an uneducated gasman can become a multibillionaire overnight and everybody finds it perfectly acceptable. That’s just Orbán.
Our country is not a country that denies the ideas of democracy and freedom. That’s just Orbán and his cronies.
Our country is not a country that the young flee because they cannot find a future here. That is just Orbán’s Hungary.
Our country is not a country that hates strangers and turns her back on people in need citing Christian morals and national culture. That’s just Orbán’s.
Our country is not a country filling people’s heads with lies amidst much nationalistic chest thumping. That’s just Orbán’s.
Our country is not a country that begs and ponces aggressively while reviling the one giving the money. That’s just Orbán’s.
Our country is not a country that attacks science, culture and improvement. That’s just Orbán’s.
Our country is not a country that kicks the aged and ailing into the ditch. That’s just Orbán’s.
Our country is not a country that lies slyly at home and abroad and tries to undo the EU. That’s Orbán’s, too.
Our country is not identical with Orbán, his business partners or the government. Our country is something else. Our country is us.
We value the European community and we want to remain an integral part of it.
We never again want to be dependent on Russia, regardless whether its leader be called Putin or something else.
We stand up against corruption, do not want it to be a part of our everyday life, we do not accept or tolerate it.
We show solidarity: we help the ones in need, donate money, clothes and food, sacrifice our time and effort to sustain those condemned to death by the government.
We do not believe and accept that the relatives and friends of Orbán or any other politician can leech themselves onto the resources of our country and suck it dry like a bunch of disgusting fat vampires. We talk about it, protest against it, find out the truth, speak up and voice the truth.
We hold on to freedom and democracy. We will not have our backbones broken, we will not shut up and we are not afraid.
We want our sons and daughters to come back, to have something to come back to. We would like to create a liveable country for them and for ourselves.
We welcome guests, take them in and share our food with them. We help those in need even if we do not attend church regularly, or at all.
We appreciate any help and understand that it is not charity: developing each member state serves the interest of the EU.
We make a stand for science and culture, support it and protect it. We protest in the streets if they want to close down our universities, we queue up for theatre tickets, we value the products of the human mind.
We organise our own networks so that unattended old people can be provided for; we place a carefully wrapped half loaf of bread, fruit and tinned food on the lid of the dust-bin, so no-one has to go through the garbage looking for food. We provide meals, take warm clothes, hot tea and medicine to our struggling fellow human beings.
Hungary is not identical with Orbán, she is not identical with the government. Hungary is fallible, sometimes stumbles, sometimes she is too forbearing, but basically she is a good, tolerant, helpful, democratic, free and proud country here in the heart of Europe.
Do not forget it, because it is important. Very important. Viktor Orbán is NOT Hungary. Hungary is us. Together. Everyone.
