I am starting to be fed up with our politicians again. This time in general, because in particular I have been fed up with them for a long time. It so  happened that TV2, the channel of doughnut shop and casino laundrette  owner Andy Vajna dumped on Gábor Vona (Chairman of the Hungarian nationalist party Jobbik). This part of the game of course, only this time they challenged his masculinity. So all hell broke loose.

Is it just me or has anyone else also noticed that in our country you can swimmingly steal, cheat and lie? A politician can help himself to public funds freely or can spend fifty times his salary’s worth, nothing happens. Trouble arises only if someone dares challenge the other’s masculinity. Then half-naked gladiators take clashing to the battlefield, object to, demand, resent, and launch their counter attack.

Gábor Vona duly appeared at a press conference where among other things he informed the public about the following:

I am a proud heterosexual.

Well, I cordially congratulate Gábor Vona, but I would like to ask quietly: what on earth makes him so proud? If I am not mistaken, he is a father. Possibly a brother. Presumably he has friends. What would happen if one of his kids turned out to be gay? Or one of his relatives? Or one of his friends? Would he disown his child or relative? Would he turn his back on his friend? If the answer is yes, he has nothing to be proud of. If the answer is no then what are we talking about?

My other favourite of the day is press agent of the PM Bertalan Havasi who for reasons known to him alone joined this brouhaha.. In answering the question of political weekly HVG – whether the open letter of Mrs Vona will elicit a reply from Mrs Orbán [1] (which in itself is complete and unadulterated madness) – he managed to come forth with the following gem: The PM himself has long been a target of similar attacks but

There are people who can handle such attacks like a man and there are people who go and hide behind their wives.

Apropos hiding behind one’s wife: what of László L. Simon pretending not to know anything about apricot kernels[2] because the business is run by his wife, not to mention Antal Rogán whose wife organised his helicopter flight or at the very least was the one to demand it?

But let us return to the present dick-measuring contest. The thing is we do not even notice what sick phallocracy we are building here. It is completely acceptable for an old geezer to call a woman a stinky old whore. Or for a young one. Or for a woman to do the same. We do not bat an eyelid hearing that women earn less money than men or that it is normal to expect them to do the housework and be humble.

In case you haven’t noticed at least half of the population of our country is female. No woman is a born cook, cleaner or babysitter. We learn these things.  Just like a man is able to learn these things. Although my man is no politician only a regular guy, it never occurred to him to use his manly superiority as the ultimate argument. He goes shopping, cooks dinner, does the washing up, hangs out the clothes to dry. Even irons them. Without any previous arrangement. As we live together we know without any extra conference which one of us is the busier. The one with less to do will cover more housework. And for your reassurance: I also mow the lawn, fix the dripping tap or wash the car. And I have been able to retain my femininity while he has not lost a single bit of his masculinity.

It would be advisable to acknowledge (or to discover if it has escaped your notice) that there is no reason to be proud of your sex or your sexual orientation, just like there is no reason for chest thumping over a thousand other things. You have to be an honest and normal human being, that’s all.

On a final note: during this demeaning verbal brawl has anyone stopped to think  how many women have been offended? Has it occurred to anyone how many gay people have been hurt, how many parents of gay people have been wounded? Anyway, what has human quality to do with the sex or sexual orientation of someone?

This country sorely needs a female PM. She can be liberal,  homosexual or gipsy,or all three at once Just to make us understand that none of it matters. The time may have come for us women to join hands. We are second-rate cleaning champions anyway, let’s grab those brooms and clean out the rubbish. From our lives and from the parliament, too.

[1]          Krisztina Vona-Szabó, Gábor Vona’s wife  addressed an open letter to Anikó Lévai, Viktor Orbán’s wife, asking her to plead with Viktor Orbán in order to stop the attacks concerning their private lives.

[2]          Apricot kernels: László L. Simon’s wife owns (jointly with her husband) a winery where they tried to sell apricot kernels at an extortionate price claiming that the product can cure cancer. When confronted, he denied all knowledge about  his wife’s business dealings.adomany
